Institute finds high-level of aflatoxins perilous to health, economy

The recently instituted Ethiopian Biotechnology Institute (EBTI) in its preliminary field and laboratory tests found that the extent and existence of fungus that results in aflatoxins has become a serious health risk and economic burden to the country, The Reporter has learnt.

Tasked to study the severity and the prevalence of aflatoxins in agricultural commodities, EBTI has launched a scientific research project dubbed: “Curving Aflatoxin Challenges of Food and Feed Value Chain for Improved Food Safety and Security in Ethiopia”. Firew Tafesse (PhD), Food Safety (mycotoxins) Researcher with EBTI, who leads this scientific mission, said that the project is expected to provide solutions and preventive measures.

Firew told The Reporter that the presence of aflatoxin has been clearly identified. In fact, the preliminary studies conducted in the field and laboratory tests showed fungus in sesame, ground nuts, sorghum and maize crops. These are some of the cash crops the economy depended on for its export earnings.

According to the scientist who researched aflatoxin, 80 percent of ground peanuts sampled from the eastern part of Ethiopia have confirmed a huge strain of aflatoxin that has been identified in Babille, Gursum and Darolabu – areas of the eastern and western Hararghe zones of the Oromia Regional State.

Based on the sample of soils; peanuts both taken from farmers and storages have indicated the existence of aflatoxin hosting fungus. Basically, oil seeds are major hosting produces and it has become eminent that peanuts, sesame, maize and sorghum are prioritized for the research. The project will blanket potential areas of the country. 

In addition to these, the scientific mission during its phase two will include to study the presence of aflatoxins in dairy and spices such as chili pepper. According to the research team leader, among the aflatoxin families, aflatoxin B is seriously dangerous for both human and animal consumptions. Firew said that aflatoxin B causes liver cancer and yet remains the least measured in the country.

The study project highlights and explains what aflatoxins are and how they are toxic to humans as well as animals. Aflatoxins are highly toxic secondary metabolites produced primarily by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticuson agricultural commodities. These fungi are often found to be associated with pre and post-harvest contaminations of food and feed crops in Ethiopia.

Recently, the problem was magnified as exported agricultural commodities and products failed to meet the minimum quality standards set globally. Some of the exported spices, mostly chili peppers, were shipped back home due to a higher rate of aflatoxin contaminations. Furthermore, locally consumed produces were also confirmed of having the contagion. 

Firew said that the concern of the study project is to develop safe biological controlling tools such as atoxigenic strains of aflatoxin friendly controlling approach. The study further will reach to develop and formulate indigenous bio-control agents from atoxigenic flavus strains (major source of aflatoxins).

During the course of the project, perception and awareness creation activities to farmers, traders, food and feed millers and consumers who are susceptible to aflatoxin are the major targets. The solution and the technology devised are expected to be disseminated across the areas which have high potential of hosting the fungus.
